Exercise 3: Sediment Studies

In the previous exercises, you have discovered how sediment layers are collected to describe their composition and learn about the past. In both activities, you used a straw to collect a core sample.

Real core samples are collected using huge drills aboard drilling ships. The picture on the left shows a drilling ship used by the Ocean Drilling Program. This ship collects cores nearly 10 meters long that may represent thousands of years of geologic history.
