Modeling
Sedimentation and Core Sampling

Simliar to ice cores
that tell about geologic history through layers of ice, sediment core
samples are drilled from the ocean floor. A drilling ship drills down
into the earth. Using a drilling pipe, a long piece of earth is removed
(for
more about this process, click
here). This
piece of earth is called a core sample. Instead of digging up large areas
of land, core samples are collected to reveal information about the layers
of the Earth and analyze its composition.
In the following activities, students will model core sampling techniques
to get a better understanding of how layers of sediments are removed and
analyzed.
