Examine Figure 1 in detail.  You will see a chart with samples and depths from Leg 133, Site 816, Hole A. Species names of microfossils are listed across the top of the chart.  An “X” in the chart represents that a particular microfossil was found at a particular sample depth.  Do you see any pattern of fossil ranges on this chart that is similar to the ranges of family members in your Family Tree exercise? 

Look for the deepest occurrence of each fossil (which may represent the FAD of that fossil) or the shallowest occurrence of each fossil (which may represent the LAD of that fossil), and mark these potential “events” on your chart. Underline each deepest occurrence and draw an upward-pointing arrow from that line. Draw a line directly above each shallowest occurrence and add a downward-pointing arrow to it. (Question for thought: Are there any LADs at 81.65 mbsf? Why or why not?)
